[J-Movie] Last Scene (2002)

Opening with a sequence that turns out to be from a cheesy melodrama, first half is set in 1965, when the big-screen career of rising young actor Ken Mihara (Hidetoshi Nishijima) is torpedoed by the marriage and retirement of his regular leading lady, Keiko Yoshino (Yumi Aso), and growing competition from TV. Already arrogant, Mihara goes completely off the rails, punching out a grip and later screaming at his own wife, Chizuru (Mayumi Wakamura), who promptly dies in a car accident.
Thirty-five years later, old and dying, Mihara (musician Johnny Yoshinaga) turns up for a bit part in a trashy drama, playing a dying patient in a hospital. None of the youngsters recognize him, though a young female props manager, Mio (Kumiko Aso, from “Ring 0: Birthday”, takes a shine to him and a couple of older set hands (including the guy he punched way back) renew their acquaintance. Unlike in the old studio days, time is now money and any sense of craftsmanship is secondary to getting the shot in the can. Mihara keeps fluffing a particular line until Mio and the others take some extraordinary action.
